Triona
This particular craft destined for operations in coastal waters of Westport, Ireland, was ordered by Blackshell Farm Ltd. Designed by Strathclyde Maritime, Glasgow, headed by Naval Architect, Charles Giffard, the final design evolved after close collaboration between owner, builder and designer.
Designed primarily for mussel farm service, the design brief included the ability to service salmon farms, carry general pallet freight and to ferry vehicles up to a 10 tonne twin axle laden lorry. Shallow water operation restricted draft and the vessel has a laden draft of only 0.9m. The interior is subdivided by watertight bulkheads forming a 6 tonne water ballast tank for’d with a 10 tonne blood tank just aft, these tanks being 3m wide midships, and void spaces either side. A midships full width space with deck access hatch serves as a dry store. The fuel tank is built into the middle space of 2,600 litre capacity. The aft third of the vessel is the engine room with twin C-Power Ford 6/380 normally aspirated diesels flexibly mounted driving stainless shafts and 700mm bronze propellers, shafts running in water lubricated cutlass bearings. Both engines are fitted with PRM 601 gearboxes each driving a clutched hydraulic pump.
The two separate hydraulic systems serve the Palfinger 12500m crane and bow ramp rams on one engine, and the owner’s deck machinery off the other engine. The crane is fitted with a 2.5T capstan winch and a 2T line winch plus auxiliary machinery hydraulic supply.
A Jabsco 1 1/2” bilge/deckwash pump is fitted with suctions to all spaces, and a Gilkes J70 3” pump capable of 1000 litre/minute output serves as deckwash for mussel cleaning etc. This order continues the long-standing tradition of boatbuilding at Corpach producing custom built vessels to owner’s specification and built to the highest standard of construction and outfit.
Triona Update
Having successfully completed three years of hard service ‘Triona’ returned to Corpach in order to undergo radical surgery to increase her capacity. Prior to her return a 4m long midship section was prefabricated and on her arrival she was cut in half transversly. With the 2 halves pulled 4m apart the new midship section was welded in and the disturbed bilge, fuel and hydraulic piping was made good. At the same time a 19Tm Palfinger crane was fitted and the whole vessel was shotblasted and re-painted. This again demonstrates Corpach Boatbuilding’s ability to build a vessel which can be made to grow, literally, with your business.
